Even though the Academy Awards indicate the end of awards season, the Saturn Awards offer fans of science fiction and fantasy some excitement for some of the most popular films and televisions series of the year. This year's Saturn Awards feature nominations for "The Hobbit" and the hit-series "The Walking Dead."
The contestants for Best Science Fiction Movie include "The Avengers," "Cloud Atlas," "Chronicle," "The Hunger Games," "Looper," and "Prometheus."
In Best Fantasy Film "The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Life of Pi," " Ruby Sparks," "Snow White and the Huntsman," and "Ted" are the top contenders.
Films recognized in the Best Horror/Thriller category include Academy Award winning best picture "Argo," "The Cabin In the Woods," "The Impossible," " Seven Psychopaths, " "The Impossible," " The Woman in Black" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
"The Bourne Legacy," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Django Unchained," "Les Miserables," "Skyfall," and "Taken 2" rounded out the Best Action/Adventure Category.
In the Best Independent Film race, "Compliance," "Hitchcock," "Killer Joe," "The Paperboy," "Robot and Frank," "Safety Not Guaranteed," and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" are the contestants.
Other categories in the race include best writing, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and actress, best young actor, best director, best production design, best editing, best music, best costume, best makeup, best special effects, best international film, and best animated film.
The organization also recognizes the best in television with such categories as best network television series, best syndicated cable television series, best television presentation, best youth-oriented series on television, as well as numerous acting awards.

Anyone can be a member of the organization for a yearly donation or fee. Members are allowed to vote on the awards and pick the winners.
