Gamers know that everytime a new console is announced there is one primal fear: costs are going to up. As it stands, with internet connections, DLCs, and most games running $60, gaming can become an expensive pastime. Still, after recently announcing the PlayStation 4, Sony has come out saying don't fear, games shouldn't experience a price hike on the next-generation console.
"I think people are willing to pay if they see value there and I think there's more choice than ever before for consumers. We're going to welcome free-to-play models; games from 99 cents up to those $60 games," SCEA CEO Jack Tretton mentioned to CNBC.
Tretton also went on to state that there will be low-cost games, right in line with Sony's declaration that smartphones, tablets, and developers were all being given higher priority than before. Still, he squashed any speculation that the inclusion of budget apps to the PlayStation library could end up running big-budget, expensive games out of business.
"I think those are additive experiences. They demystify gaming; they bring people in with a bite-sized gaming experience. But ultimately, I think people migrate up the food chain. Conversely, if you're somebody who considers themself a true gamer and wants to play the most powerful devices and the most deep and rich gaming experiences, you're not going to find yourself migrating down the food chain other than to maybe kill some time or to complement that core gaming experience."
Sony did not actually show off the PlayStation 4 console at the PlayStation Meeting 2013, but it did reveal the DualShock 4 controller as well as showcase the system's impressive social networking and sharing capabilities.
The console will release during the 2013 holiday season, and should launch at a lower price point than the PlayStation 3 had at its inception.
Are you excited about the PlayStation 4? Or are you waiting for Microsoft to reveal the Xbox 720 before making a decision?
