A horrific scene unfolded at the Las Vega strip early Thursday when two people died after they were trapped in a fire engulfed taxi and another man was shot dead by a gunman that sped off in a SUV, CNN reports.

Around 4:20 a.m., a SUV stopped next to a Maserati at a stoplight at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road and opened fire on the driver, police said, adding that the Maserati then drove into the intersection and collided with a taxi.

The taxi was struck several times by on coming vehicles and burst into flames with the driver and passenger trapped inside, police say. They were later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Maserati died from gunshot wounds but a passenger who was also struck survived and is being treated at a Las Vegas hospital. At least two additional people suffered light to moderate injuries when they crashed during the incident.

Police are on the search for the shooter and describe the SUV as a black Range Rover Sport with tinted windows, large black rims and a dealer license plate not from Nevada, police said.

The identities of the victims have not been released. Police have no information about what may have led to the shooting.

John Lamb told CNN he witnessed the chaos from inside the Caesars Palace.

"There was a loud bang, and I hear two other booms. I looked out my window at Caesars Palace ... and could see the fireball," he said.
