Lindsay Lohan's new film "The Canyon's" has been acquired by IFC Films.
The film is directed by Paul Shrader (Affliction) and has been described as an erotically charged "post-modern story about power and the dark side of Hollywood." It centers around a scheming and very wealthy movie producer Christian (James Deen) who makes movies to satisfy his father's demands. Lohan stars as Tara, his girlfriend who's hiding an affair with an actor from her past.
The film was reported to have a budget of $250,000, with $150,000 raised via kickstarter. It suffered from production difficulties due to Lohan's troubles. The New York Times reported that Lohan was fired at one point and missed time after partying late at night.
The film is also famous for being rejected from the Sundance Film festival and South by Southwest Festival. The two festivals stated that "It's got an ugliness and a deadness to it."
Additionally the writer Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) admitted that the film is one and a half hours but feels like its three hours long. He said it was supposed to be a pranky noir but Shrader was too serious.
However Kent Jones, director of programming at the New York Film festival raved about the film stating "On one level, The Canyons is a visually and tonally precise, acid-etched horror story of souls wandering through a hyper-materialistic hell, with a fearless and, I think, stunning performance by Lindsay Lohan at its center; on another level, it's an inspiration and an example to us all: it's difficult for me to imagine another filmmaker of Paul Schrader's stature diving into the world of crowd-sourced moviemaking, let alone with such fervor, dedication and rigor,"
IFC is planning on releasing the film on VOD and in theaters later this year. The film also stars director Gus Van Sant and adult star James Deen,
