The Marist Red Foxes men's basketball team defeated Iona in dramatic fashion on the road Thursday night. Chavaughn Lewis hit a 65-foot shot as the overtime buzzer expired to force another period, and Marist eventually topped the Gaels 105-104.
When was the last buzzer-beater you saw that was this far beyond half court?
Center Adam Kemp led the squad with 29 points and 16 rebounds, but didn't have more than all of the Gaels. Lamont Jones added 37 off of the Iona bench. Lewis was tied with Jay Bowie with 21 points scored, good for second on the team. Lewis was just two assists short of a triple-double, recording ten points and eight assists, while also having four steals and two blocks.
The box score for the game is here.
Lewis leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. He also leads in steals per game (2.2), and is second in both rebounds (5.4) and assists (2.5) per game. His three-point shooting percentage is .339, while Bowie leads the team in that category with a .516 clip.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Upstate New York club. It's an especially bright spot for a team that has struggled this season. The Red Foxes are 3-10 in the MAAC standings and are 6-18 overall, having lost 12 of 13 games before the shot seen round the world (thanks to ESPN and YouTube).
The next Red Foxes game is Sunday at 2 pm EST, with Marist hosting Loyola in another MAAC in-conference contest.
