Ghana and Mali will face off in the consolation third place match at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
Of the semifinalists, Ghana was the favorite to win the tournament but failed in a shootout loss to Burkina Faso. Ghana had a 1-0 lead after one half but gave up an early second half goal. After the tying goal, Ghana was unable to create a great deal of pressure and ultimately found themselves in a penalty shootout against a team with nothing to lose. Ghana missed three of its shots including the opening kick taken by Isaac Vorsah.
They will take on Mali, a team that suffered a worse fate in the semifinals. Patrice Carteron's team suffered a 4-1 loss to Nigeria that included three first half goals. The team looked completely overwhelmed throughout the match and never really got going.
The teams faced off in the group stage and Ghana won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wakaso Mubarak.
This is the fourth time that Ghana plays in the third place match. The team won third place in 2008 but lost in 1996 and 2012. Meanwhile Mali will play in its fifth third place match ever. The team won third prize last year after losing in 1994, 2002, and 2004.
Predictions: Ghana has had a history of under-performing the last few years, but they will look to get revenge for losing last year's third place match with Mali. Ghana wins 3-1.
