The Microsoft Surface Pro midnight release event in New York's Union Square has been canceled due to Winter Storm Nemo.

While the Surface Pro still goes on sale at retail outlets across the country on Saturday, the late-night gala scheduled for a Best Buy in New York City is off, as the city braces for the first major storm to hit since Hurricane Sandy.

"Given the blizzard warning for NYC area I'm super bummed I won't be able to be there to see the first #Surface Pros sold in Union Square," tweeted Panos Panay, leader of Microsoft's Surface team, late on Thursday night.

Microsoft later released a statement saying, "Surface Pro launch activities in NYC have been cancelled due to weather; our best wishes for everyone impacted by the blizzard."

The Surface Pro is the full-featured version of the Surface RT tablet, which the company released last year to lackluster interest and stagnant sales.

Microsoft hopes to revitalize the brand with the Surface Pro, which includes a full Windows 8 operating system, as well as a portable form factor, touch input and stylus.

The Surface Pro is available online beginning Saturday and at Best Buy and Microsoft retail stores in the United States and Canada, as well as Staples stores in the U.S.
