A giant winter storm is expected to hit the Northeast, bringing along several inches of snow to New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of southern and eastern New England, including Boston, Hartford and Providence, up to the New York City metro area and Long Island, Weather.com reported.
Up in New England, the National Weather Service warned that the snowstorm is expected to drop about two feet of snow Friday into Saturday. A blizzard warning will take effect 6 a.m. Friday and will last until 1 p.m. on Saturday, the NWS stated. The warning includes: "eastern and southeastern Massachusetts, including Boston and Boston Metro area, all of Rhode Island, including Block Island."
According to the warning, snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches is expected, as well as quarter mile visibility and "winds gusting near 60 mph." The warning states that light snow will begin Friday morning and will intensify throughout the day. "The heaviest of snowfall, especially focused along the I-95 corridor, will fall Friday night into Saturday," the NWS stated.
Travelers are encouraged to take precaution. White out conditions are expected as well as strong north-northeast winds with gusts of up to 60 mphs, the blizzard warning stated.
Northeast Snow Storm Nemo: How To Prepare For The Weekend
Down in the New York City Metro area and Long Island, the National Weather Service warned that the snowstorm is expected to drop close to one and a half feet of snow. The blizzard warning will also take effect at 6 a.m. Friday and will last until 1 p.m. Saturday, the NWS said. The warning will include New York City, southern Westchester County, Suffolk and Nassau counties on Long Island and coastal portions of northeast New Jersey.
Snow accumulation of 10 to 15 inches is expected throughout the Tri-state area, "with localized higher amounts within developing snow bands," the warning stated. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected in Nassau County and up to 60 mph expected in Suffolk County. "The strongest winds and heaviest snow will occur Friday evening into Saturday morning," the warning said.
Travelers in New York are also encouraged to take precaution. "Heavy snows and winds will make for dangerous driving conditions with visibilities near zero in White-out conditions," the NWS warned.
