The SimCity 5 beta test this weekend is over, so now all we have to look forward to is the final game, which launches on March 5. Too bad for Mac owners, who will have to wait until sometime this spring for their copy of the game.
According to the SimCity FAQ page, the Mac version isn't just a port, but a fully-native version that runs on Mac OS X.
"We want to take the time to ensure that Mac fans will get a version worthy of their platform," said Maxis on the page. Mac players can expect their SimCity games to run as beautifully on their platform as it does on Windows. Apple devotees have always gotten the short end of the stick with SimCity, and every other computer game, for that matter. The developer's focus on the Mac version of the game is a refreshing change of pace.
"You will be able to pre-order SimCity for Mac soon. Stay tuned for more information," says the site.
One new thing that SimCity 5 will offer is multiplayer, which supports up to 16 players in the same world. That includes Macs along with Windows computers, so at least one Mac gaming wall is coming down. The multiplayer will also include a saving feature that will automatically capture your game progress while you play online and save it to the cloud.
The best thing about the Mac-built SimCity 5 is that the full 3D graphics that the new game boasts will work as well as they can on your Mac, depending on your specs. Just make sure it's not the same Mac you used to be a virtual mayor when the last SimCity game was popular.
