Broadway welcomes the underbelly of high school girls' hell.

Tina Fey has confirmed that she plans to adapt her 2004 film Mean Girls, which follows a vicious tale of friendship and betrayal between two high school girls played by Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, into a musical and hopes to bring it to Broadway.

The 30 Rock and former Saturday Night Live star spoke with E! News at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday and mentioned that she plans on developing the musical with her husband, who does the music for 30 Rock.

The series finale of 30 Rock airs Jan. 31, sparking Fey's interest in taking on the project.  Her performance on the show got her Best Actress in a Comedy Series at the Screen Actors Guild, where she announced her plans to make the musical upon the conclusion of 30 Rock. The show originally aired in 2006 and has occupied the majority of the actress's time ever since. The finale of the monumental series comes as a small blessing for Fey, allowing her to focus on other things such as the musical.

Among Lohan and McAdams, Fey casted a stellar group to star in Mean Girls. She herself played a self-deprecating math teacher and her former Saturday Night Live castmate Amy Poehler, who played McAdam's provocative and irresponsible mother.

When asked about a recent argument between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on American Idol over who was the bigger Mean Girls fan, Fey told E! News that she thought Carey won. "Mariah seemed to really know all the characters," she said. Fey later added that there may be a role for Carey in the musical, perhaps as Poehler's role as the wild "cool" mom.

Broadway is accustomed to evil and debauchery, but the treachery that Mean Girls will bring is unparalleled. It's scandalous pageantry, ferocious characters, and satirical realism should be a perfect recipe for a great musical.
