Is there relief in sight in improving Matt Lauer's popularity?

Since spring 2012, Lauer has seen a decline in popularity stemming from Ann Curry's departure from the NBC morning show "Today."

Lauer has been blamed and had allegedly people yelling at him out in the streets of Manhattan.

A new ad campaign by NBC for their morning show hopes to repair Lauer's image with features him and weatherman Al Roker reminiscing about the past like one family would do.

According to Radar Online, the campaign isn't working.

"The crew is just left scratching their heads over the ad," a source told Radar.

The source added that NBC's campaign hopes to bring the morning show back to first place, ahead of ABC's morning show "Good Morning America." NBC has been losing to the ABC morning show last spring as well during Curry's co-host tenure with Lauer.

"This is part of NBC's great new plan to try and take back first place from 'Good Morning America,' (GMA) but it just isn't working. 'GMA' is still in first place and Robin Roberts is returning from her medical leave of absence in the next few weeks," said the source. "Why focus the ad on Matt Lauer? This is the "Today" show, not the Matt Lauer Show....the entire cast should be used for future ads. Willie Geist and Hoda Kotb are wildly popular, you have to remind the public why they should watch the show....not remind them of the one reason people aren't, Matt Lauer!"

This isn't the first time a source has told Radar about alleged actions by Lauer.

Previously, it has been reported Lauer wants NBC to let Curry go from her contract so she may front a new primetime show on CNN.

"Matt only wishes Ann the best and thinks it's for the best if she were to take a job at another network," Radar added, noting that he doesn't understand why NBC executives are at a stalemate if Curry demanded her release.
