This weekend three news films open nationwide and could posed major threats to box office queen Jessica Chastain. Those three movies are "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," "Movie 43," and "Parker."
The biggest film of the weekend is "Hansel & Gretel:Witch Hunters." The film is expected to land the number one spot. "Witch Hunters" stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arteron and tells the story of bounty hunter siblings Hansel and Gretel as they track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that holds a secret to their past. The film was not screened for critics and opens in 3,372 theaters.
The second film of the weekend is "Movie 43" which boasts an ensemble cast that includes Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Johnny Knoxville, Elizabeth Banks, Naomi Watts, Richard Gere, and Hugh Jackman. The film showcases a series of interconnected short films that follow three kids as they search the depths of the Internet to find the most banned movie in the world. The film features 11 directors and 15 writers. The movie was not screened for critics and opens in 2,023 theaters.
The third film to open is "Parker" starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez. The film is directed by Academy Award nominee Taylor Hackford and tells the story of a thief with a unique code of professional ethics who is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew's latest heist. The movie has obtained unfavorable reviews with a aggregate score of 30% on Rottentomatoes.com. The film opens in 2,224 theaters.
In the art house theaters Magnolia's "John Dies at the End" and IFC's "Knife Flight" open. The Academy Award nominee "Silver Lining Playbook" expands into 118 more theaters for a total of 2,641. Dustin Hoffman's "Quartet" will also expand to 163 theaters.
