The Wii U iteration of Super Smash Bros. is one of the most hotly anticipated titles for the console. On Wednesday, fans were given a big boost of hope as Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced that the first screens of the title would be previewed at E3.
There is no definite date for the release of the title at the moment but according to the International Digital Times, Nintendo "intentionally" delayed the game. The publication asserts that Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai was told to stop production on the title to focus on his passion project "Kid Icarus Uprising."
The publication also sites rumors from 2012 and asserts that the title could be called "Super Smash Bros. Universe" and that the 3DS version could be called "Super Smash Bros Dreams." The rumor for "Dreams" was based off a report from Zelda Informer that states that the Wii U version will focus on modern characters while the 3DS iteration will emphasize retro characters such as Donkey Kong Jr., Mach Rider, Ridley, and Stanley the Bug Man among others.
The title was originally announced at the 2011 E3 and is the first installment in the series that will include the partnership of Namco Bandai. Sakurai has not made any major announcements on the game since development began, but he did tell fans to be more patient.
"To put it succinctly, I'll need to have you guys wait a while longer. I hardly ever write anything on Twitter any longer, and that's because I think right now is the time to stop tweeting and start putting in a real effort here. If I could put it a really harsh way, I think it'd be better if I could be forgotten by gamers for a while," said Sakurai.
"Smash Bros." is being developed for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. With the two console divisions merging, it is likely that the title will have strong interplay between the two devices; a feature lacking in past Nintendo consoles and installments in the series.
