This year at the Sundance Film Festival, sex has permeated the festival with audiences being shocked by what they have seen. The festival made up of a longtime liberal audience has mentioned that after three days the majority of the films feature sex.
Some of the films include "Two Mothers," "Don Jon's Addiction," "Kill Your Darling," "Interior. Leather Bar" and "Kink." "Two Mothers" starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright tells the story of two women who start relationships with each other's sons. The film was poorly received for it's over the top sex scenes with Hollywood Reporter writing that it was "Tasteful porn."
"Don Jon's Addiction" directed by star Joseph Gordon-Levitt centers on a man with an insatiable appetite for internet pornography. The film, which also stars Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson, was called "crude" by The Hollywood Reporter and features a dozen X-rated clips.
Another film that shocked audiences was the Daniel Radcliffe film "Kill your Darlings." The film recounts a little-known story of murder involving Ginsberg's circle of friends, including fellow future beat heroes Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster). Radcliffe who was known for his role in "Harry Potter" shocked audiences as his character Ginsberg is initiated in alcohol and drugs and there are some graphic sex scenes in the film. During the Q&A, Radcliffe was asked if he liked weird films, to which the actor responded, "Films like this don't get made unless everyone involved loves them."
On Saturday, James Franco arrived with two explicit films. "Interior. Leather Bar," starring Franco, is an experimental film that imagines what gay sadomasochistic sex footage was cut from William Friedkin's 1980 film "Cruising" to avoid an X rating. At the festival, staff members were checking ID's as audience members had to be 18 or older. Critics stated that film was explicit showing occasional scenes with fellatio.
Franco also presented "Kink" directed by Christina Voros. The documentary goes behind the scenes of the kink.com, a hardcore pornography site. Voros stated that she had a lot of discussions with Franco about how much to show and how much she could show.
With a week left at the Sundance Film Festival, neither film has yet to pick up distribution.
