On Dec. 12, the Golden Globes will announce the nominations for Best Film of the Year.
The Golden Globes have two categories for best picture. The drama is the one that is most valued as the eventual Oscar winner for best picture is usually among the nominees here. This year, the drama department has a number of big contenders with the best picture most likely among those in this category.
The film that will likely get the most nominations is "12 Years a Slave," which has all the momentum after winning three critics circles as well as the people's choice at the Toronto Film Festival.
Another strong nominee is "Gravity," which has been one of the critics' darlings and which has the big stars and a big studio backing it.
"Captain Phillips" is likely to get a nomination as well as "Saving Mr. Banks." Both of these films are studio movies with big stars and the Globes love having A-Listers appear at their events.
There are a few films that could land nominations as the Globes are known for making surprising picks. One of the biggest contenders that has been shut out throughout the precursors is "Lee Daniel's The Butler," which has big stars and a huge box office. Meanwhile, "Rush" is one of the best reviewed films of the year and a boost from the Globes could help the film's awards chances.
The last films with potential are "Mud," "All Is Lost" and "Blue Jasmine." "Jasmine" in particular could get nominated as all of Woody Allen's best reviewed movies have landed Best Picture nominations whether in the comedy or drama categories.
The Golden Globes will be handed out on Jan. 12.
